Top 5 Bak Kwa to impress this Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year is just around the corner! Wonderful delights are being sold and enjoyed by the Chinese communities during the 15-day festive period. Without a doubt, CNY is my favourite time of the year to get fat again! My tummy never fails to amaze how much food it can take in this period. And what is CNY without Bak Kwa a.k.a super sinful, awesomely delicious dried BBQ pork. In Singapore, we are definitely not short of Bak Kwa stores. Here at Geeky Auntie, we present to you the top 5 Bak Kwa you must try!

Lim Chee Guan 林志源

Lim Chee Guan is probably the hottest Bak Kwa store in Singapore now, with hours of snaking queues every Chinese New Year. Due to the much time and effort needed to acquire their Bak Kwa, people who has purchased this will always proudly display them like a prized possession among their new year goodies. This makes it the perfect gift for families and friends this coming CNY! Lim Chee Guan’s signature is their sliced pork Bak Kwa, which is soft, tender and juicy. There are many Bak Kwa stores out there which can get this texture and taste, however, consistency is what Lim Chee Guan is famous for. You will definitely not be disappointed with their Bak Kwa!

Kim Hwa Guan which is located in a food centre is famous for their square minced pork Bak Kwa. Minced pork is usually fattier than sliced pork Bak Kwa which is prepared from a large block of meat (leaner and tougher). If you prefer something that is easy on the mouth, you will love Kim Hwa Guan’s masterfully grilled, super soft and tender Bak Kwa.

Bee Chang Hiang is our home grown brand – the pride of Singapore. It has 290 outlets internationally, 42 retail outlets in Singapore and the rest spanning across Malaysia, China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Korea, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, with the latest venture into Japan and Vietnam. One of my all-time favourite is their vacuum packed Bak Kwa which is amazingly able to retain that perfect taste in every piece of meat. They make ideal gifts for my friends living overseas who are able to enjoy this delicacy anytime, anywhere. Who can ever resist Bee Chang Hiang’s savory and succulent Bak Kwa with the sweet barbecue smell? My personal favourite is definitely the chili pork.

Given that Kim Joo Guan only has 1 outlet in Singapore, it is no surprise to see the long queue of people braving the crowd to lay their hands on their exclusive Bak Kwa. Do you also know Kim Joo Guan only uses 100% Australian fresh pork instead of frozen ones to preserve the authentic taste? Hence, their Bak Kwa are well known for being thicker, but still very juicy and sweet. Do get their signature sliced pork Bak Kwa if you have the chance!
